Illinois ‘Clean Slate’ Law Allows Automatic Sealing of Nonviolent Criminal Records

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker signed the Clean Slate Act, which will require law enforcement and court clerks to automatically seal eligible nonviolent records for more than 1.7 million people beginning in 2029, reducing the need for individuals to navigate the process on their own. The law doesn’t expand the types of records that can be sealed, but it removes administrative hurdles that previously kept many from seeking relief. Supporters say the change can help people reenter the workforce, secure housing, and fully participate in their communities, while critics raised concerns about implementation costs. A task force will oversee the rollout over the next five years, and records will be sealed in phases through 2034.
