Gov. JB Pritzker Signs Clean Slate Act, Breaking Barriers For Millions

Illinois recently enacted the bipartisan Clean Slate Act, establishing an automatic process to seal eligible conviction records without people having to petition the courts. Previously, individuals had to navigate complex, costly steps to seek record sealing, but this law removes many of those barriers by streamlining and automating the process beginning in 2029. Advocates say the change will open doors to better employment, housing, and educational opportunities for people who have paid their debt and remained law-abiding, and could bolster the state’s workforce and economy. The Act does not automatically seal records for violent offenses or other serious charges, and agencies like law enforcement and courts will still have access to sealed histories when permitted by law.
