Advocates Cheer New Illinois Law That Seals Non-Violent Convictions 3 Years After Completing A Sentence

Advocates are celebrating Illinois’s newly signed Clean Slate law, which will automatically seal records for people with non-violent offenses three years after they finish their sentence, starting in 2029. Supporters say the change will remove barriers to employment, housing and financial opportunities that have long hindered people’s ability to move forward with their lives. The law does not apply automatically to individuals with violent offenses, who will need to petition a judge. Some opponents expressed concerns about accountability and the cost to the state, but lawmakers say implementation time will allow for funding and planning.
