Organizers Await Pritzker’s Signature On Historic Clean Slate Legislation

A broad coalition of social-justice groups in Illinois is celebrating the passage of the Clean Slate Act (HB 1836) by the state legislature on October 30, 2025, which would create an automatic record-sealing process for many arrest and conviction records. The bill now rests on Governor Pritzker’s desk, with his support not yet confirmed. Advocates note that more than 2 million Illinois adults have criminal-justice records that present significant barriers to employment, housing and economic participation, and estimate the reform could restore billions in lost earnings. While the legislation is a landmark step for justice reform in Illinois, it exempts serious offenses such as murder, human-trafficking and Class X felonies from eligibility.
