Maine’s Clean Slate Act Would Promote Fairness and Preserve Public Safety

In this opinion piece, Margo Walsh, founder and CEO of Maine-Works, explains why she supports Maine’s Clean Slate Act (LD 1911), arguing that old arrest or conviction records should not limit a person’s future potential. She highlights how the current petition-based system is inaccessible and how the bill would replace it with an automated system that improves fairness while maintaining public safety. Walsh notes that expanding record sealing could help an estimated 163,000 Mainers access jobs, housing, and education, and shares personal stories to illustrate the transformative impact of second chances.
