The Clean Slate Initiative endorses the Fresh Start Act

Sheena Meade, Executive Director of The Clean Slate Initiative, released this statement In response to the introduction of the Fresh Start Act, bicameral legislation to increase funding for automated record clearance that removes barriers to employment for justice impacted people:

β€œIn state after state, advocates, businesses, elected leaders and impacted people are coming together to address the barriers to employment, housing, and economic mobility caused by having an arrest or conviction on your record through clean slate automatic expungement. We are proud to endorse the Fresh Start Act as another step toward ensuring that a past record is not a life sentence to poverty for the 70 - 100 million people in America who have one.

CSI applauds Congressman David Trone, Senator Chris Van Hollen and the bipartisan group of lawmakers including Reps. Rodney Davis (R-IL), Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE), Dan Crenshaw (R-TX), Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA), Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA), Stephanie Bice (R-OK), Madeleine Dean (D-PA), Victoria Spartz (R-IN), and Cori Bush (D-MO) and Senator Bob Casey, who have come together to lead this effort with long-overdue reform that will give people with records who have done their time and paid their debt a fair opportunity to rebuild their lives, take care of their families and contribute to their communities.”
